With the support of the Ford Foundation and APWA, the foundation stone was laid by Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt in 1952. An autonomous governing body, called the Council of Home Economics with representatives of APWA and Govt. of Pakistan was constituted. This council was formed for the purpose of establishing, running, and managing the college. Oklahoma State University coordinated the Home Economics Program and continuously trained the staff of RLAKCHE abroad till 1971. The College worked as a semi-independent public institution under the management of a governing council. The federal government paid the salaries of staff and provided a budget for the running of the college. The first batch of students was admitted in 1955. General Masters in home economics started in RLAK CHE Karachi in 1961. The first batch of Specialization in different areas of home economics Passed out in 1992. BS-Home Economics Program was initiated in 2008 and the first batch passed out in 2011. The Board of Intermediate Education, Karachi is responsible for examining Intermediate students, and the University of Karachi for Graduates RLAK CHE was taken over by the government as part of its nationalization policy for educational institutions in 1972. The provincial government supported the college by constructing new blocks of buildings in 1991 and initiating a renovation scheme in 2005. The RLAK Government College of Home Economics is the only college of its kind in the province of Sindh catering to the needs of female students from all over the province for the past half century and more. RLAK-CHE is a professional-level college offering numerous highly specialized and technical courses in five different areas of Home Economics – i.e. Apparel and textiles, Art and design, Family and human Development, Nutrition and dietetics, Residential Management, and entrepreneurship; – including internships and research projects in the senior-most year of studies that are a compulsory requirement for every student graduating from the college. RLAK CHE is spread over a sprawling 25-acre (approx.) of land interspersed with various buildings and large areas of vacant land. The physical infrastructure and facilities are on the scale of a university campus rather than a college The college has: six academic blocks; a hostel; an administrative block; a well-stocked library; principal’s bungalow; and employee residences. RLAK, CHE has well-equipped Labs (Chemistry, Microbiology, Physics, Foods Lab, Montessori School, Play Area, Weaving Lab, Experimental Textile Lab, Home Management Lab) RLAK, CHE has well-equipped two computer labs with access to the internet; a spacious auditorium, and multimedia facilities for use in academic and extracurricular activities. Other physical facilities of the College include student-residence blocks (part of the curriculum requirement for the subject of Residential Management), an audio-visual conference room, seminar halls, a badminton hall, a cafeteria, bookshop, and a photocopy shop.
